In
the Café Quarter you will find a bronze sculpture
larger than the bollards which is one of two which
have been made. Total cost for both sculptures is
£7,500 shared between the Town, District and
County Councils. The second bronze is yet to be located
in the town.
The
first bronze forms a central focal point to the café
quarter and it not only looks good but asks to be
touched to feel its smooth rippled texture.
At
the base of the sculpture is a small block inset into
the pavement to recognise that this was placed here
to recognise the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth
II.
Mike
Fairfax and Sebastian Boyesen took their inspiration
from the estuary and the beach. The result gives a
contemporary feel to the town centre rather than a
retro ‘Victoriana’ approach followed by so many towns.
The blue colour for the street furniture picks up
not only the natural elements of sea and sky but also
colours from the town crest. The Ochre colours of
the bollards follow the geological interest of the
area at the start of the World Heritage Site at Orcombe
point and the natural colour of the rocks. The pattern
is of ripples of the sea and also found in the estuary
on the sand when the tide is out. Also look at the
patterns on the new bus shelters to see the ripple
theme continued.
