Whilst the main attraction is the two miles of family friendly beach, ideal for swimming, sandcastles or exploring the rock pools, there is also the amazing Exe Estuary, home to numerous amounts of wildlife and a real favourite for birdwatchers, as featured on the BBC Autumn Watch 2010.
And of course Exmouth is the home of watersports with the town boasting great conditions for Sailing, diving, Kite surfing, windsurfing, kayaking and much more. No wonder the town has produced World Champions and Olympic medallists in several of these disciplines.
The Exe Sailing Club being the RYA Club of the year and home to twice Olympic Silver medallist Joe Glanfield plus fellow Olympians Ben Rhodes and Stevie Morrision. Steph Bridge is the three times World Kitesurfing Champion.
Gateway to the UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which stretches across to Lyme Regis, with 250 million year old cliffs, exposing a wealth of geological wonder that can be viewed either by walking along the breath-taking coastal path or by a pleasant boat trip along the shoreline.
History shows Exmouth was the first coastal resort in Devon and there’s plenty to bring the past to life in Exmouth. Visit Natural Trust property A La Ronde , then explore the Blue Plaque Heritage trail, and learn about some of the names you will see - the Powder Monkey, The Pilot, The Bath House, Mona Island to name but a few .
Lady Nelson, Shelly and Byron are just some of the famous names that are connected to Exmouth. Not to mention the infamous Duchess of York, wife of the Grand Old Duke of York!
And if that's not enough, there's a cycle path that takes you all the way along the seafront, and up the beautiful Exe estuary to the picture-postcard village of Lympstone and beyond to Exeter. Hire a bike in the town, there’s plenty of choice.
For cyclists and walkers who fancy a more vigorous route, follow the cycle path towards Budleigh Salterton then head onto Woodbury Common for an off-road adventure exploring the fantastic Devon countryside, with views across to Sidmouth, across the Exe and even to the far distant Somerset levels. The iron-age fort is a magical location, steeped in ancient history.
Keep an eye out for the great events that regularly happen in Exmouth. The annual arts and music festival is a major attraction, the autumn illuminated carnival, the kite festival the Christmas Cracker and the Christmas Day swim (yes really, it’s a huge event with hundreds of bathers) are all experiences that will stay in the memory forever.
New Year’s Eve in Exmouth is a night not to be missed. The whole town turns out in fancy dress and you will stick out like a sore thumb in “normal clothes.” Indeed Exmouth is regularly voted in the top five places in the UK to spend New Year, with fireworks on the seafront marking the New Year.
Come and see the British countryside in miniature with 20 trains weaving their way through 115 scale miles of varied landscape at Exmouth Model Railway. The Model railway is over 40 years old and remains a firm favourite to visitors from all over the world. Then of course there are several great golf courses, boat trips, the marina, fishing, cinema, boating lake, tennis, bowls, cricket, crazy golf and donkey rides.
But don’t forget to leave time to just sit, relax and watch the world go by and the sunset across distant Haldon Hills. Possibly whilst sampling one of the local ales or wines in the variety of bars, prior to making the most of Exmouth’s vibrant nightlife.
Exmouth really is the place to Come to Life. In fact with so much to do, you better come back again soon!
